SCHOOL OF CHINESE MEDICINE

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has taken a strategic approach to the research and development of drugs based on traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) with the establishment of the Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development in the Health@InnoHK cluster (The Centre).

For years, the University has been focusing on the translation of Chinese medicinal wisdom into pharmaceutical products using cutting-edge technology. The Centre will serve as a strategic platform for HKBU researchers to join forces with renowned global partners and expand the range of CHM-based drugs. It will achieve this goal by enhancing the quality of preclinical and clinical CHM research and transforming the results into pharmaceutical products for international markets.

The Centre has three main objectives:

  • Creating a platform for the development of CHM-based drugs, including the functional units of preclinical and clinical studies, such as pharmacognosy, pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, omics and bioinformatics;
  • Developing new CHM-based drugs to fill the gaps in the market; and
  • Nurturing talent for CHM research in Hong Kong.
